The Unique Challenge
• Aurora University's athletic program lacked a cohesive, contemporary brand identity capable of unifying 20+ sports teams, inspiring athlete pride, and competing visually with peer institutions
• The existing mark had lost its connection to the program's heritage and lacked the flexibility to work across the expanding range of applications — from digital media to physical facility environments
• Required an identity system with the range and depth to function across radically different contexts: game-day uniforms, print programs, social media, environmental signage, locker rooms, and championship banners
• Needed institutional buy-in from athletic administration, coaches, and student athletes — making the creative process as much about stakeholder alignment as visual design
The Strategic Solution
• Rooted the new identity in a historically significant interlocking AU mark previously used by the program, creating an intentional connection to institutional heritage while modernizing the execution
• Developed a primary mark with dimension and visual energy, supported by a suite of secondary marks that gave teams and channels flexibility without fragmenting the brand
• Introduced a new typeface and graphic element system aligned with the grit and competitive identity of Spartan athletics, expanding the brand vocabulary beyond the logo
• Led a multi-year rollout across every brand touchpoint: print collateral, digital platforms, email, social media, uniforms and athletic apparel, facility signage, environmental graphics, locker rooms, and arena floors
• Built and managed the full production ecosystem — vendor relationships, print production, fabrication coordination — ensuring quality and consistency across physical and digital applications
